What is acrylic signage?
Acrylic signage is any sign made from acrylic sheet, a clear, rigid plastic that can be cut, engraved, printed on, painted and bent. It looks like glass but is lighter and much harder to break. In Malaysia it is a popular choice for shop signboards, reception signs, clinic and salon names, and plaques, because the colours stay sharp and the edges look clean.
Types of acrylic signboard
- Acrylic signboard: a flat acrylic panel with your name and logo printed, painted or applied on the face, for shopfronts and walls.
- Acrylic plaque: a clear or frosted panel fixed off the wall on metal standoffs, used for company names, notices and certificates.
- Cut acrylic letters: letters cut from acrylic and stuck or pinned to a wall, from flat letters to thick 3D acrylic letters.
- Acrylic light box: an acrylic face over LED lights, so the sign glows at night. Also called an acrylic LED box.
- Lit acrylic panel: a slim panel with edge lighting for a modern, even glow.
Acrylic signboard design
A good acrylic signboard design uses the material’s strengths: bright, even colour, crisp edges and a glossy surface. Keep the name large, limit the colours to two or three, and leave space around the logo. For clear acrylic we can print the back so the face stays smooth and scratch-free. We place the design on a photo of your wall or shopfront before we make it.
Acrylic or stainless steel?
Acrylic gives a glossy, colourful finish at a lower cost and suits most interiors and covered shopfronts. Stainless steel is heavier and more premium, and it handles open weather better over many years. Many signs combine both, for example acrylic letters on a metal panel. For raised letters outdoors, also see our 3D signboard page, which covers frontlit, backlit and non-light letters.
Where acrylic signage works well
- Shop and boutique signboards under a covered frontage
- Clinic, dental and salon names and door signs
- Reception logos and company plaques, see also office signage
- Showrooms, restaurants and cafes
- Price lists, menu boards and notice boards
If you want the whole sign to glow at night, an acrylic face on an LED lightbox is the usual answer. For a simple, lower-cost sign with no acrylic at all, see basic signboard.
