What is safety signage?
Safety signage is any sign that warns people of a hazard, tells them what they must or must not do, or shows where safety equipment and exits are. At a building site, factory or warehouse it is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to reduce accidents, and it helps you show that workers and visitors were told about the risks.
Types of safety signs by colour
Most safety signs follow a colour code that workers learn to recognise at a glance. The symbols commonly follow ISO 7010, and the colours follow the same system.
- Red, prohibition and fire: things you must not do, such as no smoking or no entry, and the position of fire equipment.
- Yellow, warning: hazards to watch for, such as electrical danger, forklift traffic, wet floor or excavation.
- Blue, mandatory: actions you must take, such as wearing a helmet, safety shoes or gloves (PPE).
- Green, safe condition: exits, first aid, assembly points and emergency showers.
Site safety signage and safety signage board for construction sites
A site safety signage board is usually a large panel at the gate that lists the site rules, the PPE required, emergency numbers and the main hazards. Around the site we add smaller signs for excavation and open trenches, electrical hazards, scaffolding, falling objects, speed limits for site vehicles and restricted areas. For construction safety signage that stays readable in rain and sun, we use aluminium or ACP panels with weather-resistant printing or reflective sheeting.
Warehouse and forklift safety signage
Warehouses need signs for forklift routes, pedestrian walkways, loading bays, maximum load, racking limits and no-entry zones. Forklift safety signage works best when it is placed at eye level at junctions and doors, with floor markings backing it up. We make both wall-mounted signs and hanging signs for tall aisles.
Workshop, factory and chemical store signs
- Machine guard, moving parts and noise hazard signs for workshop safety signage
- PPE signs for helmets, goggles, ear protection, gloves and safety shoes
- Chemical store signs for hazard, storage and no-naked-flame rules, with the pictograms you give us
- Electrical safety signage for panels, substations and live equipment
- Housekeeping and workplace safety signage such as “Keep walkway clear”
Fire safety signage
Fire safety signage includes fire extinguisher and hose reel signs, assembly point signs, emergency exit and fire door signs. For exit signs that must be seen when the lights go out, we can make photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) versions. Exit and wayfinding signs inside buildings are also covered on our indoor signage page.
Rest area and workplace signs
Rest area safety signage covers rules for smoking areas, drinking water, prayer rooms and rest stops, and reminders such as hand washing or no food in work areas. A set of workplace safety signs also often includes first aid, emergency contact and notice boards for office signage; for door names and plaques see office signage.
Materials and sizes
- Aluminium plate and ACP: strong, rustproof and good for outdoor and site use.
- Reflective sheeting: bright in headlights and torch light, for roads inside sites and car parks.
- Acrylic and PVC board: neat for indoor use, offices and factory floors.
- Vinyl stickers: a fast, low-cost way to label machines, doors and walls, see wall and glass stickers.
- Photoluminescent film: for exit and escape route signs.
Sizes range from small machine labels to large gate boards. Tell us the viewing distance and we will suggest letter and symbol sizes that can be read from far enough away.
Safety signage in Malaysia: standards and what we do
In Malaysia, workplace safety is governed by the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA) and guidance from DOSH (JKKP), and fire safety by the Fire Services Act 1988 and the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA). Which signs you need, and their wording, depends on your premises, so please confirm the list with your safety officer or competent person. We make the signs exactly to the wording, symbols, colours and sizes you give us, and we can use standard ISO 7010 symbols. We cannot certify that a site complies with any regulation.
If you are marking roads, car parks or traffic routes, see road signage. For a simple printed shop board without safety content, see basic signboard.
